Abstract

The conference, “The American” Eugenio Corecco – Eugenio Corecco “l’americano” is planned to take place at the Facoltà di Teologia di Lugano from December 4 to 6, 2025. The 30th anniversary of the death (1995–2025) of the internationally renowned Swiss theologian and canonist Eugenio Corecco (1931–1995) offers an opportunity to achieve a more comprehensive account of his thought, law theory and reception.

In Europe and Switzerland scholars are often unaware of the fact that Corecco’s theory and works have been a subject of considerable reception within the domain of North American scholarship since the 1980s, especially in the US. Nowadays, Corecco’s work is predominantly read in English language; contributions on his thought are published by esteemed publishing houses such as Cambridge University Press, Duquesne University Press, Oxford University Press, Springer and University Press of America. Corecco’s reception is therefore increasingly global. The conference therefore features speakers from academia across four continents (North America, Africa, Asia, and Europe).

Why is studying Corecco’s thought interesting today? Why has his thought attracted so much interest from North America? What are the most valuable aspects of Corecco’s theory of law? And what are the most critical insights? These are some of the main questions the conference “The American” Eugenio Corecco – Eugenio Corecco “l’americano” will focus on.

Corecco founded the Facoltà di Teologia di Lugano (FTL) in 1992, where an honorary Chair dedicated to him has been active since 2019. The “Cattedra Eugenio Corecco” of the FTL is therefore the most appropriate place to establish a new network between researchers and institutions interested in studying Corecco and organizing a conference like this.
