Biography

Gabriele Neri (born 4 Sept. 1982) is an architectural historian, curator and architect. He is currently Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in the History of Architecture at Politecnico di Torino, Italy. He was Weinberg Fellow in Architectural History and Preservation at the Italian Academy for Advanced Studies in America, Columbia University, New York (Spring 2022). 

He was Mâitre d’enseignement et de recherche at the Academy of Architecture of the Università della Svizzera italiana, Mendrisio, CH (2019-2022), where he has taught since 2012, and adjunct professor in the History of Design and Architecture at Politecnico di Milano, Italy (2011-2022). 

He holds a Ph.D. in History of Architecture and Urban Planning (Politecnico di Torino, 2011), and a Master’s Degree in Architecture (Politecnico di Milano, 2007). 

In 2018-2021 he served as member of the Board of Directors of the Fondazione Museo del Design (Triennale Design Museum, Milan, Italy). He is currently member of the Scientific Committee of the Vico Magistretti Foundation, Milan. He was appointed associate researcher of the Archivio del Moderno, USI (2016-2021).

In 2015 he won a Research Grant from The Design History Foundation (Barcelona, Spain) and the Alfaro-Hofmann Collection (Valencia, Spain). 

His published monographs include: "Pier Luigi Nervi in Africa" (Macerata: Quodlibet, 2021, and Cape Town, 2021); "Umberto Riva Designer" (Siracusa: LetteraVentidue, 2022); "Umberto Riva. Interiors and Exhibitions" (Siracusa: LetteraVentidue, 2017, 2018, 2021); "La Colonia Olivetti di Brusson. Ambiente, pedagogia e costruzione nell’architettura italiana" (Rome: Officina Libraria, 2021); "Caricature architettoniche. Satira e critica del progetto moderno" (Macerata: Quodlibet, 2015); "Capolavori in miniatura. Pier Luigi Nervi e la modellazione strutturale" (Mendrisio: Mendrisio Academy Press, 2014); etc. 

He has curated various exhibitions and catalogues on 20th century architecture and design, including: “Umberto Riva. La vie des formes” (Istituto Italiano di Cultura, Montréal, 2023); “Vico Magistretti. The Conquest of Space” (Vico Magistretti Foundation, Milano, 2023, with M. Cassani, and L. Poncellini); “Pietro Lingeri. Abstraction and Construction” (Triennale Milano, 2021); “Vico Magistretti Architetto milanese” (Triennale Milano, 2021); “Umberto Riva. Forme” (Galleria Sozzani, Milan, 2019), “Louis Kahn and Venezia” (TAM Mendrisio, 2018, with E. Barizza), "Forme: Umberto Riva architetto designer” (Galleria Sozzani, Milano, 2019); etc. 

His essays on the history of architecture, design and engineering have been published in volumes, exhibition catalogues and international reviews (Casabella, Domus, Lotus International, TEC 21, Journal of the IASS, Il Disegno di Architettura, Bauwelt, Archi, Rassegna di architettura e urbanistica, etc.). 

Since 2011, his articles on architecture have appeared regularly in the cultural pages of the Italian newspaper "Il Sole 24 Ore". He is also on the editorial staff of the Swiss magazine"Archi, and the biannual open-access peer-reviewed Journal Histories of Postwar Architecture. Since January 2023, he has been the author of a monthly column about architecture and satire (“Archisatire”) for Domus.
