Descrizione
The course examines the main international and regional instruments regulating States’ environmental policy, with a focus on the European Union (EU) legislation. It first introduces the students to the main features of international and EU environmental law (actors, sources and institutional frameworks) and gives an overview of its foundational principles and objectives, such as sustainable development and the precautionary principle. It then focuses on a number of core substantive areas of regulation, namely climate change and energy, biodiversity, hazardous substances and marine resources. Finally, the course addresses the relationship between international and EU environmental protection and other branches of international law such as international economic law (trade, investment and intellectual property rights) and human rights.
