Descrizione

At the end of the course, the students will be able to:

  • understand the meaning of touristic travel in a global era;
  • know the issues concerning different kinds of tourism practices (naturalistic tourism, heritage tourism, ethnic tourism);
  • develop a critical approach to alternative kinds of tourism (sustanaible, responsible, etc.)
  • critically analyze and evaluate the impact of different types of tourism in a non-European context.

Obiettivi

The course will provide a broad and critical view of the different implications of the tourism activity. As a first point, it is necessary to reflect on what it means to do tourism in a globalized era and how the new imaginaries of which tourism inevitably feeds are built. An overview of the different types of tourism and tourist encounters will then be provided, with particular attention to the anthropological-cultural aspects.
If, on the one hand, tourism can be a resource for the communities that host it, on the other, it can induce transformations not always positive. This is even more evident when it comes to tourism in non-Western countries, where the economic and cultural gap might sometimes turn into a new form of colonization.
An ad-hoc section of the course will be devoted to African tourism, both domestic (national and intracontinental) as well as international.
