The course includes theoretical lectures where central topics are developed, with particular emphasis on economic reasoning and real-world examples. During the exercises, selected problems will be discussed and solved. Specifically, after an introduction to the subject of microeconomics, the program includes an analysis of markets under perfect competition conditions. The relationships between supply and demand and price formation through market equilibrium in the short and long term will be analyzed. In the second part of the course, students will learn about the choices of firms that maximize their profit with market power (monopoly, monopolistic competition, oligopoly). Special attention will be given to price discrimination strategies and strategic decision-making. The course also includes an introduction to game theory with simultaneous and sequential games.

Obiettivi

The course aims to equip students with the necessary tools to delve into the concepts of microeconomics for an adequate understanding of the behavior and choices of economic agents, such as consumers and firms, and the functioning of the market in (im)perfect competition. The first part of the course is dedicated to the theory of the market in perfect competition, at the end of which the student will be able to determine the optimal choices of agents and the formation of prices through market equilibrium. The second part of the course focuses on production and thus on market supply in imperfect competition. The choices of firms with market power will be analyzed, with particular emphasis on practical concepts such as price discrimination strategies and strategic decision-making.

Every two weeks, students will be invited to complete a series of exercises. The series aims to allow students to concretely apply what they have learned in theory and serve as useful practice for the exam.
