Biografia

Angelo Auricchio is Deputy Head of Cardiology Division and Director of the Clinical Electrophysiology Unit at Fondazione Cardiocentro Ticino, Lugano, Switzerland. He is Professor at the Faculty of Biomedical Sciences at Università della Svizzera italiana in Lugano, Switzerland, and Professor of Cardiology at University Hospital in Magdeburg, Germany. He is co-director of the Center for Computational Medicine in Cardiology at Università della Svizzera Italiana in Lugano, Switzerland. He is serving as Scientific Director at the Fondazione Ticino Cuore, an institution devoted to increase public awareness of out-of -hospital cardiac arrest victims and to improve the survival rate of victims of out-of hospital arrest. He is the Past-President of European Heart Rhythm Association (EHRA).

Dr. Auricchio graduated in 1985 at Medical School in Naples (Italy), in 1994 he received a PhD in Cardiovascular Physiology at University of Rome “Tor Vergata” (Italy), in 2000 he was appointed as assistant professor in cardiology, and finally in 2008 he was appointed as full professor of cardiology at University of Magdeburg where he is still teaching. Dr. Auricchio is also a part-time professor in Cardiology at University of L’Aquila (Italy). As assistant staff physician, he worked at various prestigious institutions including the University Hospital in Naples (Italy), the University Hospital in Hannover, the University Hospital of Rome Tor Vergata, and in finally the Department of Cardiology in Aaslst (Belgium). Between 1994 and 2005 he was appointed as Director of Interventional Cardiology and Electrophysiology at University Hospital in Magdeburg, Germany; in 2006, he became director of the Clinical Electrophysiology Program at Fondazione Cardiocentro Ticino, Switzerland.

Dr. Auricchio served as principal investigator of several important multicentre studies and international registries, including the PATH-CHF studies (sponsor: Guidant), Painfree SST study (sponsor: Medtronic), RESHAPE study (sponsor: Abbott Vascular), CLEPSYDRA Study (sponsor: Sorin Group), the WISE-CRT (sponsor: EBR System), SYNCHRO study (sponsor: Livanova), SMART-CRT (sponsor: Boston Scientific), and the European CRT registry of the European Heart Failure Association and European Heart Rhythm Association. He has served as chair or co-chair of several task forces including the joint Heart Rhythm Society and EHRA Expert Consensus Statement on Cardiac Device Monitoring. He has served as a member of the Task Force for European Society of Cardiology Guidelines for Cardiac Pacing and Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy, and as Chair of the EHRA Cardiac Rhythm Management Product Performance Task Force. He has been a Board member of the European Society of Cardiology (2009-2013), of the Cardiovascular Roundtable of the European Society of Cardiology (2010-2013), and Board Chairman and President of the European Heart Rhythm Association (2011-2013). He has served as member of the Training and Research Grant Committee of ESC (2009), as member of the Clinical Practice Guidelines of ESC (2007-2009), as member of the Scientific Programme Committee of Congress of ESC (2014-2016), as Chairman of the Scientific Initiative Committee of the EHRA (2005-2008), and as Chairman of the Scientific Documents Committee of EHRA (2007-2010).

He is the author of over 90 scientific review articles and book chapters, and more than 300 original scientific papers. He has served or is currently serving among others on the editorial board of Journal of the American College of Cardiology, Journal of Cardiovascular Electrophysiology, Journal of Interventional Cardiac Electrophysiology, EP Europace Journal, and Arrhythmia and Electrophysiology Review. In 1991, Dr Auricchio has been awarded with the very prestigious Young Investigator Award by the North American Society of Pacing and Clinical Electrophysiology, and in 2005 he received the Fritz Acker Award by the Germany Society of Cardiology for his breakthrough research activities in the field of cardiac resynchronization therapy. In 2016, he received the “Laurea Honoris Causae” of the University of Tucuman, Argentina.

He is the co-editor of several books including “Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy” (2006, 1st Edition; 2008, 2nd Edition), “Pacing to Support the Failing Heart” (AHA serie, Blackwell Publisher in 2009), “Cardiac Imaging for Diagnosis and Treatment of Electrical Disorder” (Springer Verlag in 2011), Case Studies in Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy (Elsevier, 2014 in press), and Clinical Cardiac Pacing, Defibrillation, and Resynchronization Therapy (5th Ed. Elsevier Publisher, 2016).
