Ena Lloret Fritschi

Dr. Ena Lloret-Fritschi is an architect with years of experience in digital concrete. In her new position at AAM-USI, she will lay the foundation for a future professorship in Fabrication- & Material-Aware Architecture, using cutting-edge technology with cementitious materials. The goal is to develop design and fabrication tools that reveal the design potential of such digital fabrication processes. The field of architecture today generally separates how a building is designed from how it is constructed, resulting in both a physical separation between the designer and the maker and a chronological separation between design and construction activities. By merging design, material properties, and construction/fabrication practices, Dr Lloret-Fritschi aims to show that it is possible to use less materials and thus move towards a more sustainable construction culture.

Before joining the AAM-USI, Dr. Lloret-Fritschi held a Postdoctoral position in Digital Fabrication, at the NCCR, ETH. Here she was in a bridge position between two research groups, Gramazio Kohler Research (GKR) and Physical Chemistry of Building Materials (PCBM), focusing on shaping concrete with minimal materials using digital fabrication processes.

In June 2016, she obtained her PhD in the Department of Architecture (D-Arch) at ETH under the supervision of Fabio Gramazio, Matthias Kohler and Robert Flatt. Her thesis, “Smart Dynamic Casting: A digital fabrication method for non-standard concrete Structures” made her one of the pioneers in cutting-edge processes for digital concrete. In 2012, that project received the Concrete Innovation Award at the Concrete Innovation Conference in Oslo and was one of 5 finalists for the SPARK award at the ETH Zurich.

Previous to her work at ETH, Dr. Lloret-Fritschi completed a Master in Architecture at the Design Research laboratory (DRL) at the Architectural Association in London. Her study there resulted in a successful master thesis project, “Fluid Cast,” a project which marked the start of her interest in using digital fabrication to shape initially fluid materials without a formwork.

Dr Lloret-Fritschi also has several years of professional experience in as an architect in practice, working for firms that include OMA in Holland, Allmann Sattler Wappner in Germany, and Dietrict Untertrifaller and Querkraft in Austria. She was the project leader for several architectural competitions and planning projects.

With the starting help of an SNSF Eccellenza Professorial Fellowship, “Material Aware Architecture” with Ultra-Thin Formworks,” and a recent Innosuisse Grant with Müller Steinag AG / CreaBeton, ”Digital Casting System: Increased productivity in prefabrication,” Dr Ena Lloret-Fritschi aims to use her years of experience as a practitioner and researcher to establish the foundation for a future professorship at AAM-USI. She plans to continues to investigate conventional and unconventional construction materials with the goal of opening up new design possibilities for architecture that move towards using less resources, realizing sustainable construction through cutting edge technologies.
