Abstract

LEM - The Learning Museum is a Europe wide network which aims to establish a permanent space for museums and adult educators to act in a learning society and in a knowledge based Europe.
To keep up with change, however, museums are not only expected to be learning places, but learning organisations themselves: learning from the communities, from the public, from their stakeholders, and also from other agencies, with whom they have to build alliances to accomplish the ambitious objectives set by policies at national and European level and meet the challenges of the future decades.
LEM aims to create a permanent network of museums and cultural heritage organisations, to insure that they can play an active role with regard to lifelong learning and to raise awareness among decision makers at national and European level. It will do so through this dedicated and dynamic website, international conferences and meetings, the publication and dissemination of thematic reports, the piloting of a mobility scheme for museum educators within the partner countries to support peer learning and the exchange of knowledge at European level.
Through its partners and associates, LEM expects to reach the whole museum and heritage community and a large part of the adult education sector.

In the frame of the LEM project TEC-LAB intends to contribute to the general aim of the network in areas such as Dissemination and Management. In specific, TEC-LAB will participate to the following activities of the sub-thematic research:

  • Learning Style in Museum: continuing ongoing activities related to visitors´ studies, TEC-LAB will investigate in what sense (informal) learning works in museums, both in the case of school children and adults. The activity will imply a large number of interviews, online and onsite surveys and focus groups.
  • Audience Research and Visitor Relation Management: again through visitors´ studies, TEC-LAB will investigate the role of multimedia in Cultural Heritage communication, addressing the following questions: which multimedia information is desirable (by users and institutions) in order to improve visitors´ understanding and appreciation? When should this information be delivered to visitors? Before a visit (for preparation), during a visit (through kiosks or mobile devices) or after a visit (for getting more in-depth insights)? What are the best technologies for the different users´ experiences?
TEC-Lab will contribute by providing outcome material for the reports, in particular concerning:
  • Learning Style in Museums: TEC-LAB will contribute to the report exploiting data on cultural impact and education collected during the visitors´ studies in cooperation with its network of Museums in Lugano.
  • Audience Research and Visitor Relation Management: TEC-LAB will contribute to the report with the data collected via a number of different visitors´ studies and their interpretation.
