The paper concerns the presence of inscriptions within the literary gardens of Il Piacere (1889) and Le Vergini delle Rocce (1895), the Belvedere Garden in Il Piacere and the garden of the Montaga Palace in Le Vergini.
Through the reconstruction of the sources of inscriptions and the analysis of their use by the author, this contribution shows the function of the garden-inscriptions complex as intermedial signals of D’Annunzio’s creative process and poetics. As inscriptions are central for understanding the symbolic complex of the Vittoriale, they realise a similar function in the novels, suggesting that the garden-inscriptions ensemble also reinterprets the ancient models and fulfils a narrative and metapoetic function.
It is intended to show the relevance that characters gain as the pivot of the relationship between graphisms and landscape; as in these novels D’Annunzio realises the interplay between words and nature to portray the psychological aspects of his fictional figures, as he does in the Vittoriale to sculpt his public image.
