Sommario
The paper relates to periodical studies, which it approaches with the intermedial method and quantitative analysis. Intermediality is seen as a useful lens for filling the knowledge gaps in many ancient periodical archives: it reflects on the text-image relationship, basing its reflection on the evidence provided by the quantitative analysis. This latter dispenses large-scale data about the text-image disposition on the page (“layouts”) and the graphics used in the periodical.
The object of study is the Turin periodical «La Donna» in which Guido Gozzano (1883-1916) published twenty-three of his works (1906-1916). Analysing the layouts of «La Donna» literary publications allow to hypothesise and reconstruct the “balance of power” between editor, writer and illustrators. Recognition of recurring layout patterns (“templates”) or graphics will enable this reasoning and partially fill the lack of editors-authors epistolary and archival data related to old periodicals and their practical making.
The qualitative study will also be based on the data provided by the quantitative analysis of layouts conducted with a digital tool for Document Layout Analysis – whose development an essential part of the research.
