Biography

Professor Alessandro E. Ceschi, M.D., M.Sc., FEAPCCT, is a clinical pharmacologist and toxicologist and general internal medicine specialist physician (board certified). He is Medical and Scientific Director of the Institute of Pharmacological Sciences of Southern Switzerland, Director of the Clinical Trial Unit EOC (CTU-EOC, associate member of the Swiss Clinical Trial Organisation, SCTO), Head of the Division of clinical pharmacology and toxicology, including the Regional pharmacovigilance centre, and President of the Drug and Therapeutics Committee at EOC. He is the Coordinator of the Accompanying group EOC-Faculty of Biomedical Sciences USI and Member of the EOC Scientific Research Advisory Board.

Prof. Ceschi is Consultant at the Department of clinical pharmacology and toxicology of the University Hospital Zurich.

He is Professor of medicine (Titularprofessor) in clinical pharmacology and toxicology at the Faculty of Biomedical Sciences of the University of Southern Switzerland, Senior lecturer in clinical pharmacology and toxicology at the Faculty of medicine of the University of Zurich - where in 2015 he received the Venia Legendi (postdoctoral lecture qualification), ten years after having received the title of Doctor of medicine - and Lecturer in clinical toxicology at the Department of pharmaceutical sciences of the University of Basel. 

He is a former member (6-year term) elected by the Federal Council as representative of the Swiss Medical Association at the Federal Drug Commission of the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health.

Prof. Ceschi is Board member at the Swiss Society of Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology (SSCPT), Steering Committee member at the Swiss Group of Pharmacogenomics and Personalised Therapy (SPT), and active Member of several international and national scientific medical societies. He is Fellow of the European Association of Poisons Centres and Clinical Toxicologists (EAPCCT).

He is Expert for the World Health Organization (WHO) Global Patient Safety Challenge Medication Without Harm, Member of the WHO Global Patient Safety Network, and Collaborator at the Center for the Advancement of Healthcare Quality and Patient Safety (CAHQS). He contributed as Expert to the first Swiss National Report on Quality and Safety in Healthcare commissioned by the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health. Prof. Ceschi is Member of Choosing Wisely Switzerland.

In 2018 he was awarded the first Swiss Innovation & Quality Award, Patient Safety Category, by the Swiss Academy for Quality in Medicine and the Swiss Patient Safety Foundation.

Prof. Ceschi is a former Expert for the EU-funded Project ECHEMNET, coordinated by the International Research and Development Group, Public Health England, and a former Research Consultant for the National Poisons Centre, Tox Info Suisse, which is an associated Institute of the University of Zurich. Until June 2015 he was the Head of the Division of Science at the National Poisons Centre.

He is Author for UpToDate® Evidence-Based Clinical Decision Support, and Peer-reviewer and Editorial board consultant for different medical journals.

A. Ceschi and his team have two clear research lines: 1) drug safety and 2) clinical toxicology, both with a focus on epidemiology, i.e. pharmacoepidemiology and toxicoepidemiology, with ideation, planning, organization, and conduct, including data analysis and manuscript writing/publication, of many studies with different designs.

He is author of several articles published in scientific peer-reviewed medical journals. Please refer to PubMed for full list of publications.

Prof. Ceschi has been the Supervisor of many junior researchers at graduate and postgraduate level (Doctoral dissertations and Master's theses).

He recently obtained a postgraduate Master's of Science Degree - European Programme in Pharmacovigilance and Pharmacoepidemiology (Eu2P) - from the University of Bordeaux in collaboration with partner Universities (Erasmus MC University Medical Center Rotterdam, University of Utrecht, University of Barcelona, University of Campania, University of Hertfordshire). 

He speaks Italian, German, English, French, and Spanish.
