Abstract

The free online course (MOOC – Massive Open Online Course) “Tourism Management at UNESCO World Heritage Sites (vol. 3)” was created and coordinated by USI’s UNESCO Chair in ICT to develop and promote sustainable tourism in World Heritage Sites and the University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne. It provides theoretical lessons that the UNESCO UNITWIN "Culture, Tourism, Development" Network has researched and applied in its decades of experience and know-how and features case studies from around the world: they show tourism and heritage from various possible angles and innovative ideas on how to address tourism in the present and future, during crises, for vulnerable groups and in low to high income contexts. The course, in English and Arabic, is open to anyone (newcomers are welcome!) and is of interest to professionals active in the tourism industry and committed to the protection and promotion of properties of outstanding universal value. The MOOC will show how to provide better experiences, understanding and management of tourism at World Heritage Sites. Thanks to the participation and support of the French Agency for the Development of Alula (AFALULA), students will have exclusive access to the challenges and opportunities for tourism development in the Saudi World Heritage site of Al-Hijr (Madâin Sâlih) with short interviews with professionals working in and for this extraordinary archaeological site at the center of the new tourism strategy promoted by Saudi Arabia. The MOOC consists of six chapters. USI was in charge of chapter 6: The 1972 and 2003 UNESCO Conventions and the Concept of Outstanding Universal Value (OUV) UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Site Management Systems Local Communities’ Involvement and Sustainable Tourism Marketing Interpretation. Stories and Memories Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs). Orchestrating Them for Heritage Tourism
