Abstract

The Ecology in Architecture Design project (EAD) will develop a blended learning course on how to integrate in the architectural design ecological considerations, both at the level of a single building and of the planning of the urban landscape. The target public are students in architecture and engineering curricula (both in the universities and universities of applied sciences). Thanks to eLearning, students will experience directly the case studies (through audiovisual guided tours) and, through exercises and simulations, will test the impact of different architectural choices on energy, air, and water fluxes, as well as on the human environment. The modular organization of the course and the strong reduction of presence teaching will enhance flexibility and allow reusing selected modules for professional architects and engineers needing retraining on a topic which wasn´t present in architectural education until some years ago.The project is lead by the Academy of Architecture in Mendrisio where ecology has been already integrated in education of architects; the Centre Universitaire d´Etude des Problèmes de l´Energie (CUEPE) at the University of Geneva will provide specific competence and simulation software, while the Fachhoschule Zentralschweiz will provide competence in building technologies and energy analysis tools and integrate EAD in the "brenet" national competence network on building technologies and renewable energies (www.brenet.ch). The three partners have officially declared their willingness to adopt EAD as a part of their normal curricula. Moreover, thanks to its modular organisation, EAD will be adopted for professional training in the participating institutions (ENBAU postdiploma courses; University of Geneva), as well as in other UAS (SUPSI; Fachhochschule Ostschweiz).
