Die Bibliotheken der Università della Svizzera italiana (USI) im Wandel: Biblioteca universitaria di Lugano – Biblioteca dell’Accademia di architettura
The Biblioteca dell’Accademia di architettura in Mendrisio (BAAM) and the University Library in Lugano (BUL) constitute the Libraries of the Università della Svizzera italiana (USI). In recent years they have conducted joint projects as well as autonomous ones: The BUL has contributed to the creation of the BiblioAgorà on the new Lugano-Viganello campus, a space intended to house the library services of USI and Scuola universitaria professionale della Svizzera italiana (SUPSI). In January 2021, the BAAM moved in on the first floor of the Palazzo Turconi, a hospital building from the mid-19th century, after several years of renovation work. The planning of the new library with about 1,800 qm, which has very heterogeneous holdings and special collections, such as author’s libraries, archives, photography and graphics holdings and a rare collection, was developed in close cooperation with the architecture office Cube from Lausanne. The aim was to display in open access shelving as much as possible of the holdings while maintaining optimal conservation conditions.
