Description

The course comprises the treatment of topics that, as part of the broader field of Descriptive Geometry, are those considered fundamental to the architect’s basic education. The method of double orthogonal projections, or Monge’s method, which provides the conceptual basis for solving the representation of objects, architectural drawings and spaces in any position with respect to the projection planes, is the basis for the canonical representations of architecture (plan, elevation, section). Axonometry - or parallel perspective - and perspective are fundamental methods of visualisation for representing volume in three dimensions. The theory and application of shadows to the architectural object, exemplified from simple volumetric schemes, completes the course.

Objectives

To provide knowledge of the theory and methods of descriptive geometry and their application in view of architectural representation. To frame these topics in a historical perspective, highlighting the importance of knowledge of the topics for the future architect

Teaching mode

In presence

Learning methods

The teaching consists mainly of lectures, performed by drawing directly on an electronic blackboard the exemplification of the theoretical foundations and, subsequently, the resolution of the cases of representation that the subject gradually presents, while also making use of simple physical models. In addition to these, there will be some exercises assigned that will be corrected on a regular basis in collective form, with the aim of better verifying the understanding of the topics in progression.

Examination information

The exam is in graphic form. During the time allotted, varying exercise by exercise, each student is asked to correctly solve the representation problem posed. The exam is divided into two tests, one for each semester of the academic year. The final assessment is the arithmetic average of the assessment of the two tests.
