Description

This course focuses on the foundational concepts of Management. We will learn a variety of concepts that will be key to understand the basic functioning of an organization (mostly economic organizations), its key actors and their relationships. 

In doing so, we will work together to address the following questions

  • What is Economic activity?
  • What are stakeholders and what is their role?
  • What is the organizational design and governance of an organization?
  • What is the economic, social and environmental sustainability of the firm?
  • How can we read and understand the key elements of a firm accounting documents? 
  • How do firms compete?
  • What are the key managerial decisions? 

Objectives

Developing capabilities such as the ability to: 

  • Analyze an organization and its environment
  • Discuss and apply various strategic frameworks 
  • Learn how to understand key accounting and financial documents
  • Learn the key ratios to evaluate a company
  • Understanding managerial decisions and the context in which they are taken

Learning methods

The course uses a mix of frontal teaching and participative learning. We will use lectures, a few case discussions, and group projects. 

  • Lectures are aimed to discuss the theory, frameworks, tools, and key concepts of Management.
  • Case discussions are aimed to apply these concepts and theories to specific (real) cases. All students are expected to come to class prepared to discuss the cases.
  • Group assignments will be based on the cases 
  • Final project is aimed at helping students summarizing the key concepts and learning how to present. 

Examination information

Evaluation 

  • Group evaluation 20% (final project)
  • Individual Evaluation 80% (finale exam)
  • Participation bonuses (+1 on your final grade) will be assigned to students that actively contribute to class discussion
