Theory and Practice of Public Space

People

Vegetti M.

Course director

Nigrelli C.

Assistant

Description

The course offers a reflection on the three spheres that make up public space: the material, the social, and the political. By discussing the main theories on the subject, it will show that only the intertwining of these different spheres can fully convey the meaning of public space in its democratic form (albeit historically variable and inherently conflictual). The lectures will then provide numerous examples of how contemporary public space is undergoing a profound phase of renewal, full of stimuli as well as challenging issues.

Objectives

Students will acquire fundamental knowledge about the meaning of European public space and its evolution throughout modernity. In addition, using the critical tools of cultural anthropology, numerous case studies will be examined to understand the ways in which different public spaces function — or fail to function.
