Mathematics: Optimization

Description

We begin with the definition and the graphical representation of two-variable real functions. Then we introduce partial derivatives and the notion of differentiability. We end with the formulation of criteria for maxima and minima, briefly mentioning the Lagrange multiplier method for constrained extremal points.

Objectives

Optimisation theory is used to solve problems such as how to maximise a company's output, knowing that its budget is limited. Building upon the notions developed in the course “Mathematics: analysis” we will study two-variable real functions and we will formulate criteria for maxima and minima which serve in the analysis of economic optimisation problems.
