Abstract
This essay provides a comparative stylistic analysis of Shakespeare’s Macbeth and of its Italian translation by the Italian Hermetic poet Salvatore Quasimodo (1901-1968), focusing on his rendering of the supernatural elements in the play as they manifest in the stylistic and verbal patterns employed by the “weird sisters”. This essay pays specific attention to loan-words, compensation mechanisms, allusions to the original and divergent translation choices, as they appear in the syntactic, metrical, rhythmical and semantic fabric of Quasimodo’s translation. The aim is to investigate Quasimodo’s process in his Italianizing of Shakespeare’s work, and to highlight the significant role played by Shakespearean drama in the development of modern Italian literature.
