Description
After the first semester’s project focused on a small space, the second semester involves designing a collective housing building. The first step in this exploration is the redrawing or analysis of significant architectural works and housing references—typically around thirty—which are added to a catalog that now includes over 300 drawings. This archive is always available to students who wish to study or further explore these themes. This well-established practice allows students to quickly acquire foundational design tools related to this new topic, such as spatial distribution, structural systems, and the spatial qualities of apartments and vertical circulation.
The site for the collective housing project will be Marrakech, where we will take our atelier trip. In the Moroccan city, we will explore important cultural, infrastructural, and architectural constructions, and we will seek to work with the theme of the figure at an urban scale.
At the beginning of the semester, a one-day visit to Milan will be organized, as we do each year, to discover works built by major postwar Italian architects.
The semester is accompanied by lectures given by the teaching staff, which delve into topics related to the semester, the site, and the project typology.
Objectives
The ambition of the course is to broaden and consolidate the students' architectural awareness, in particular related to the theme of domestic space, providing them with those architectural tools necessary for the continuation of their studies and future professional practice. The method employed is based on the well-established principles of the “Construction of the Idea”, through the use of curiosity, passion and self-critical capacity.
Sustainable development goals

Learning methods
The atelier’s method is based on the process of Constructing the Idea—that is, formulating an architectural concept only after a careful and deliberate process that begins with an initial intuition and moves through phases of cultural, tectonic, and interdisciplinary reflection.
From a methodological standpoint, the construction of an idea is always strongly shaped by individuality—that is, by processes that resist systematic or dogmatic classification. This does not, however, authorize arbitrariness. On the contrary, the process of constructing the idea requires translating intuition through a research-driven investigation into its origins and motivations, while keeping in mind a clear system of cultural values—values that are, above all, at the core of our teaching.
The essential tools needed to engage with this methodology—and which the atelier aims to instill in students—are curiosity, passion, and a healthy degree of self-criticism.
Examination information
Intermediate and final critic with guests.
A presentation that includes large-scale and detailed architectural drawings, three-dimensional images and photographs, as well as models and other materials that help illustrate both the design process and the final proposal, constitutes the set of documents required for the final critique.
