Simone Mollea

I took both my BA and MA in Classical Philology at the University of Turin, where I wrote my dissertations in Latin literature under the guidance of Andrea Balbo. I then moved to Warwick for my doctoral studies and looked at the concept of humanitas in pagan Latin literature of the imperial age (from the II to the IV century) under the supervision of Victoria Rimell and Maude Vanhaelen. I have been postdoctoral research fellow in Latin language and literature (SERICA project) at the University of Turin since 2021. I got a qualification for Associate professorship in Latin language and literature (L-Fil-Let/04) in Italy in 2023.

I have been teaching Basic Latin at the University of Italian Switzerland since 2020.

My main research interests have mainly focused on Latin concepts of value, humanitas in particular, on the philosopher Seneca, and on epitomatory works of Late Antiquity (Aurelius Victor above all). I have published the first modern commentary on Seneca's Epistulae ad Lucilium 67 and 68 (Alessandria, Edizioni Dell'Orso, 2023) as well as a monograph titled Humanitas in the Imperial Age. From Pliny the Younger to Symmachus (Berlin/Boston, De Gruyter, 2024).

I am also interested in the function of the Latin language as a vehicle of cultural exchange between Western and Eastern cultures, in Digital Humanities and in textual criticism.
