USI-SUPSI PhD school in Applied Data Science and Artificial Intelligence

In a changing world dominated by an enormous amount of data, the artificial intelligence revolution poses significant challenges and opportunities to transform society and science. Recent advancements in data science and machine learning have attracted academic, industrial, and public attention, shedding light on the need for highly specialized professionals in data science and artificial intelligence (DS&AI) who can develop and use data and human-like intelligence efficiently and ethically.

Well before the recent surge of AI across society and technology, SUPSI and USI have pioneered research in DS&AI for over two decades, especially with their SUPSI's Department of Innovative Technologies, joint USI-SUPSI Dalle Molle Institute for Artificial Intelligence and USI's Faculty of Informatics. In the last four years, driven by an increasing industrial and academic demand for DS&AI experts, SUPSI and USI launched two bachelor and one master programmes in DS&AI, attracting a growing number of national and international students.

The proposed PgB TP2 project aims to establish a timely, attractive and impactful joint PhD school in Applied Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (ADS&AI) that leverages SUPSI's and USI's expertise and common research interests. The program offers exceptional Master's students from Universities of Applied Sciences and Universities the opportunity to pursue a joint PhD in ADS&AI. A joint admission committee is responsible for selecting PhD students, whose research work is jointly supervised by SUPSI and USI academics, thus equipping them with complementary skills in fundamental and applied research. At the same time, the PgB project provides SUPSI and USI with a first joint doctoral training program beyond their undergraduate degrees. Lastly, it aims to enhance the research and teaching cooperation between the two institutions at PhD level, also providing professional development for SUPSI's academics who serve as PhD co-research advisors.
