This course examines the drivers of firm and industry profitability, equipping students with the analytical frameworks needed to understand why some companies consistently outperform others. Drawing on core concepts in corporate strategy, the course explores how industry structure, competitive positioning, and firm-specific resources shape performance differences across and within markets.

Through case analysis and applied frameworks, students develop the ability to diagnose strategic environments, evaluate competitive advantage, and make informed strategic recommendations.

Obiettivi

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Identify and explain the key determinants of profitability at the firm and industry level.
  • Apply core strategy frameworks (e.g., industry analysis, competitive positioning, resource-based view) to real-world contexts.
  • Analyze differences in performance across firms and industries using structured, evidence-based reasoning.
  • Diagnose sources of competitive advantage and assess their sustainability.
  • Formulate clear, actionable strategic recommendations based on rigorous analysis.

Impostazione pedagogico-didattica

Classes will alternate between the introduction of theoretical material, in-class exercises andcase discussions.
 

Modalità d’esame

The course grade will be based on take home assignments (60%) and a final exam (40%).
