Abstract
The Global Conference on Transparency Research assembles for the fourth time academics, policy makers, and interest group representatives to analyze and discuss the ever-growing reach and impact of the logic of transparency and openness in the public sector. It addresses issues ranging from the development of these ideas to their policy and managerial implications be it within institutions or between institution and civil society at large. The event addresses an interdisciplinary community of scholars including disciplines such as law, business, economics, communication, sociology, political science, public administration, journalism, and philosophy – all connected through their interest in transparency and openness. The aim of the conference is to strengthen the cooperation between scholars and facilitate the exchange of recent, ongoing or planned research. Plenary sessions and thematic workshops will allow scholars to share research approaches, lay grounds for cooperation and permit the in-depth discussion of diverging ideas. The conference also serves as the main forum for young researchers and PhD students in the field. The 2015 conference edition will put a special emphasis on the realities and limits of transparency in the security and military sectors; a topic so far underrepresented in the sphere of transparency research and one that is gaining relevance in the public administration and political spheres. The event will be hosted by the Institute for Public Communication at the Università della Svizzera italiana, Lugano. As part of the Swiss Public Administration Network (SPAN), the University has a strong and continuous commitment to the study of public communication, administration and management.
