Abstract
The article investigates Nievo’s literary canon proposal in the decade preceding Italian unification. Moving from his early study Sulla poesia popolare e civile massimamente in Italia, and considering how some of it’s principles (according to the often stated practical nature of the author’s poetics) are subsequently programmatically transposed in his narrative, the article eventually addresses the translations Nievo published in the immediate context of his participation in the second Italian war of independence. Following the popular and civil elements that connect the different moments of this line of development – from the mainly historical, Italian perspective in the Studiisulla poesia popolare to the contemporary, European choices suggested in his translations – the article tries to argument how Nievo’s canon imposes itself as a model of conduct for the new generations, constantly polemicizing against the ‘uselessness’ of the literary expression of some Italian second-generation Romantics.
