Description
The course, conceived partly in the form of theoretical lectures on spatial planning (or spatial development) and partly of seminars and practical work. It adopts a perspective of applied research oriented towards design, with a focus on the regulations governing buildable area within municipalities. The objective is to develop familiarity with the fundamental tools for contemporary spatial (and urban) management, through an understanding of local, regional and national planning institutions, as well as the use of spatial data management tools (GIS).
Objectives
This course pursues two objectives:
a) to be able to interpret and use territorial development and planning tools for design processes;
b) to acquire basic skills in geographic information systems (GIS) as a decision-making tool for urban planning purposes.

Examination information
Each student, in addition to attending theoretical lectures, will be required to take part in a group project focused on spatial development within buildable zones of municipalities in the Canton of Ticino. The project has to take into account the regulations of local zoning plans and involves the active use of GIS technologies.
